July 10, 2001 First activities have started The Indios in the area of the Amazonas river are still suffering from malaria. Thanks to a number of donations, however, first activities to help them have started. It will take three months until all Indios will be visited and will have received medicine. Blood tests have to be made as well as kidney tests. It is planned that all Indios shall receive vaccination. Yet this has to be repeated six times in order to really be effective. So your donations still are very urgent and very necessary. Please, donate either to the account in Germany or to the account right in Ecuador (see Spanish version). So far we have almost collected US $ 7000 yet about fife times that much is needed. Thank you in the names of the Indios. |

site to help as quickly as possible and to donate. Every single Dollar
is of use and may save the life of an Indian. Mascha Kauka, the president
of "Indio-Help" had been at the Amazonas river herself just a few weeks
ago, and had visited the Indians that are ill now. When lying down with
Malaria and high fever nobody can wait for months to receive official

Liebe Freunde der Indios, wir haben Malaria! Die Indios im Amazonasteil Ecuadors haben sie leibhaftig, und wir haben die Sorge, die Epidemie so schnell und effizient wie möglich zu bekämpfen. "INDIO-HILFE" im wahrsten Wortsinn ist so gefragt wie nie! Die Stämme der Shuar, Achuar, Záparos und Quichua, mit denen wir seit 3 Jahren arbeiten, sind von einer besonders gefährlichen Art der Malaria (Malaria Falcíparum) befallen worden. Sie schädigt Gehirn und Nieren und hat bereits zu Todesfällen geführt. Malaria Falcíparum ist neu im Amazonasgebiet und wurde hauptsächlich von Arbeitern der Erdölgesellschaften aus andern Provinzen eingeschleppt. Etwa 50.000 Indios sind betroffen. Die Maßnahmen: Laut der ecuadorianischen Malariabehörde müssen 58 Gemeinden vordringlich behandelt werden. Die Behörde ist bereit, Personal, Material und Medikamente zur Verfügung zu stellen, die Kampagne im Wald durchzuführen und Blutproben im Labor zu untersuchen. Das finanzielle Problem: Die Waldgemeinden sind nur per Flugzeug zu erreichen. Die Malariabehörde hat keine Mittel für die Flüge. Dear Friends of the Indios, We are sick with Malaria. The Indios at the Amazonas river in Ecuador are seriously ill, and we are eager to help them as quickly as possible. This really is Indio-Help, and it is needed as never before! For three years we have been working with the tribes of the Shuar, Achuar, Záparos and Quichua who now got infected with Malaria Falcíparum an especially serious kind of Malaria which had obviously been brought to them by workmen of an oil company. Malaria Falcíparum may affect the brain an the kidneys and can have fatal ending. Some Indians died already. About 50 000 Indians are in danger of being infected. What can be done? According to the official authorities in Ecuador about 58 villages urgently need medicine. The state authorities are willing to provide us with helping people, medicine and laboratory tests. The financial problem: Most Indians live in the jungle, and
their villages can only be reached by aeroplanes. The state authorities
do not have the money for these flights. We need US $ 35 000 in order
to charter aeroplanes and to bring the medicine to the Indians. ¡Queridos amigos de los indios, tenemos Malaria! Los indios de la amazonía del Ecuador la tienen de veras, y nosotros tenemos el problema de combatir la epidemia lo más rápido y eficientemente posibles. ¡En el sentido de la palabra "INDIO-HILFE" (AYUDA AL INDIO) es necesaria como nunca!
Los pueblos de los Shuar, Achuar, Záparos y Quichua, con los que trabajamos desde hace 3 años, han sido atacados por una forma de malaria muy peligrosa, la malaria falcíparum. Ataca el cerebro y los riñones y ya ha causado fallecimientos. La malaria falcíparum es nueva en la cuenca amazónica y ha sido importada por trabajadores de las empresas petroleras de otras provincias. Esto concierne a casi 50.000 indígenas.
Las medidas: Según la "Dirección de Malaria" ecuatoriana SNEM, 58 comunidades tienen que ser tratadas urgentemente. El SNEM está dispuesto a poner a disposición el personal, el material y los medicamentos necesarios, organizar una campaña en la selva y hacer los análisis de sangre en un laboratorio.
El problema económico: Las comunidades selváticas sólo se pueden visitar por avión. La "Dirección de Malaria" no tiene los medios necesarios para los vuelos. Los costos de vuelo de US$ 35.000,-- tienen que ser proporcionados por INDIO-HILFE.
